Student applauds Guam High families
By Audrey Meno
As a former Guam High School student, I would like to acknowledge the Guam High community. Recently, I’ve been reflecting on my time in high school and realized that I’ve never truly expressed how grateful I am for the people I met and the lessons I’ve learned while attending Guam High.
When people think of military bases, they often think of a transient community. While this is true, many military families that I’ve met during my time at Guam High made every effort to contribute positively to the community.
When I was in high school, I had classmates and friends who encouraged me to do my best and supported me through difficult times. I remember many of their parents helping with after-school events and cheering me on at graduation. I also had teachers who didn’t give up on me even when I wanted to give up on myself. I didn’t realize it then, but I realize it now — and I carry their kindness with me.
Guam High is often misunderstood or dismissed by the larger community. There’s a misconception that military-affiliated students are isolated or different from the rest of Guam’s student population. In my experience, Guam High was full of people from different places, cultures, and walks of life — and they brought a spirit of resilience and openness that I still admire today.
To the Guam High families who welcomed me, challenged me, and believed in me — thank you. You helped shape who I am, and I’m proud to have been a part of your community.
